There is a very sophisticated conspiracy that has been going on for centuries, to steal from people the blessing that God had designed work to be, but in this time, God is busy restoring what has been stolen.
One day, long long ago, the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth, reached down into this physical world, and began performing a most amazing miracle:
Psa 139:13 You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother's womb. (GNT)
This careful “putting together” was not only an eternally focused affair, although it surely had a lot of eternity in the mix. It was also done with a very specific time period in the Mind of the One putting that little being together. This human body and mind were designed to live a human lifetime on this earth.
Psa 139:16 you saw me before I was born. The days allotted to me had all been recorded in your book, before any of them ever began (GNT)
And so, having been put together, this body began to grow – and the miracle reached a pinnacle the day YOU were born. You started the count of your allotted days.
At that moment, you entered a world that had long ago been designed to be a place in which you could flourish, a place where you would have been raised up to take your rightful place as a ruler. But this world had been stolen. It had become enemy territory.
2Co 4:4 … their minds have been kept in the dark by the evil god of this world.
The god of this world was now someone evil. And he has very carefully and systematically redesigned this world system to now serve a wholly different purpose:
Joh 10:10 The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy.
From the moment you were born, one of the greatest and most sophisticated crimes of all time, had been taking place. The theft of one of God’s greatest treasures: YOU. Through carefully constructing one layer after the other of a carefully woven web of lies, this thief has been making every effort to hide who you really are, from yourself. And whenever you would get a glimpse of who you really might be, he would make sure that he had evidence at the ready to show you that being THAT, could never be very valuable or useful. No, better you try to be someone or something else.
The greatest theft of all time is still happening every day, as people’s design and purpose is stolen from them, and replaced with a series of lies about what they should and must do, and what they cannot do.
Now I’d like to pull this right down to something very practical. You could apply it to many areas in your life – but most of us spend at least 50% of our waking hours working, and even more if we include the time we think about, and travel to and from work. There is no other single activity in life that takes such a large chunk of our time.
What would you do if you had wanted to come and steal, kill and destroy that for which God had divinely, carefully designed and put a person together. If I were Satan, and you were my target, I might just have thought it most effective to start where you would spend most of your waking hours. I wouldn’t start at church, where you are full of faith, surrounded by alert Christians. No. I would start with your work. I would start by carefully weaving a web around you, starting from as early as I could, to keep you from ever discovering and working in an area that would be aligned with your divine design, and would give you a sense of “THIS is what I was made for!”
The Gallup organisation has surveyed millions of people as part of their Q12 program. One of the statements to which they asked people to respond was: “At work, I get to do what I do best, every day.”
Do you know how many people could agree with this statement?
Less than 20%. For more than 80% of people, the web of lies has successfully kept them from doing what they had been designed to do.
What does God have to say about this?
Jer 29:11 I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.
I want to propose that one of the core elements of a “future to hope for,” is a life in which we love most of our work. I’m not proposing that 100% of your work can be only things you absolutely love. But how many of us spend the bulk of our working doing things we don’t like, or even loathe?
Do you love your job? If not, I want to encourage you to start, without delay, to call upon God to come and shine His light into this part of your life. Ask him to begin to show you the real YOU, underneath the web of lies that the devil has spun in your life:
Joh 8:32 you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
And as you discover your true self, you will surely need lots of help and wisdom, to move from where you are today. If you are in a place similar to where I’d spent most of the first 20 years of my working life, you might be in a place where about 90% of your work varies from being unpleasant to downright loathsome and even scary. But there is a promise. Grab hold of this promise, and don’t let go of it, until the last verse comes true for you:
Ps 107:4 They were wandering in the waste places; they saw no way to a resting-place.
5 Their souls became feeble for need of food and drink.
6 Then they sent up their cry to the Lord in their sorrow, and he gave them salvation out of all their troubles;
7 Guiding them in the right way, so that they might come into the town of their resting-place.
I believe that God is about to move across the earth, guiding millions of people in how to create workplaces where they can really begin to live out the full design, purpose and potential, for which He has placed us here on earth.
That is what I call the Workplace Revival.
